Every year there are less Obstetric providers available for
the demands on the maternal population. There have been many articles in the literature
mentioning many reasons that could explain this phenomenon, but one of the main
concerns within Family Medicine resident graduates is that they don’t receive enough training within the maternal fetal health topics to feel competent and
confident in taking care of this population. On the other hand, statistics have
been showing a trend that there is a shortage, as well, from Ob/Gyn providers
since a lot of them either go into subspecialties or decide not do Obstetrics.
We can assume that due to this need, every year there are more available
fellowships within obstetrics and women’s health specialties. For this and many
more reasons, Family Residency Programs should expand their curriculum in order
for trainees to get enough teaching and “hands on” opportunities to further
improve patient’s care which is the ultimate goal.
