Module 1: Overview

Improving Obstetric Ultrasound Training in FM Residency Programs

One of the things that has been a common issue is not getting enough training during residency is in obstetric ultrasounds. This limitation go from when to order one, why, which one to order, and what to do with the results. Even those family physicians who do not do prenatal care are faced with clinical questions for which diagnostic ultrasound is indicated. On the other hand, a lot of providers are encountered with the limitation that they don’t have the skill do a basic US when evaluating patients at the office or at triage looking for fetal viability, for example, to make a quick assessment and establish a plan of care. The problem it’s not only with techniques or equipment is being able to accurately interpret images, as well. Most of the common problems encountered when trying to better train residents in this area has been lack of time, resources, and appropriately trained faculty members, among others.

This curriculum includes a module to:

  • identify what type of US to order based on the clinical indication

  • operate US machine & identify its parts

  • demonstrate how to assess fetal viability, placental location, fetal presentation and AFI using US images and videos.

  • Methods used for training include online materials, picture library, video demonstrations, and direct observation so that learners will become more competent. Evaluation will include a pre- and post-session tests, and sample cases with multiple choice questions.
